Unfamiliar with patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets? Learn about intellectual property (IP) basics and potential ways to protect your innovations as you transition from idea to product. The session will cover what inventors, innovators, and entrepreneurs need to know to navigate the world of intellectual property.

Course Outline

  • What is the The United States Patent and Trademark Office?
  • An overview of intellectual property types: patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets
  • Why innovators and entrepreneurs should consider protecting their IP
  • How to get started in protecting your intellectual property.

Learner Outcomes

  • Understanding of the four basic types of intellectual property protection and how they differ
  • Considerations for small businesses when seeking intellectual property protection
  • Familiarity with resources available through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to assist inventors, innovators, and entrepreneurs and how one takes advantage of pertinent resources
